- Have a plan and tell someone where you are going.
- Check personal flotation devices to be sure you have enough and they are all in good condition. If your pets go boating with you, be sure they have flotation devices, too.
- Be sure fire extinguishers are full and properly maintained.
- Check to endure all lights are working on both your boat and trailer.
- Especially if you have not been boating recently, check for fuel and oil leaks, plus take a quick look at hoses and connections.
- Review your watercraft insurance documents or contact your insurance agent to verify you have the coverage needed.
For one of your New Year’s resolutions, consider taking a refresher boating safety course. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission provides a list of available classes, both in the classroom and online. The U.S. Coast Guard is also a helpful training resource.
