Your Hurricane Preparation Checklist

Use this checklist to help prepare your family and home while conditions are still safe.

Protect Your Family

Know your evacuation plan. Identify evacuation routes and nearby shelters, including options for pets or family members who may need extra assistance. Gather emergency supplies. Keep non-perishable food, drinking water, first-aid supplies, flashlights, batteries and medications in an accessible location. Prepare for communication outages. Charge phones and power banks, and have a battery-powered weather radio available. Secure important documents. Store insurance information, identification and emergency contacts in a waterproof container. Keep essentials ready to go. Pack clothing, toiletries and necessary supplies in case you need to evacuate.

Prepare Your Home

Secure outdoor items. Bring patio furniture, grills, garbage bins, toys and potted plants indoors or secure them. Protect windows and doors. Close and secure storm shutters or other approved window protection before conditions become dangerous. Check your property from the ground. Look for unsecured items or areas that may allow water intrusion. Avoid risky repairs as the storm approaches. Document your belongings. If time allows, take photos or videos of your home and valuable personal property.

Prepare for Power Outages

Charge essential devices. Fully charge phones, flashlights, portable chargers and other necessary equipment. Prepare your vehicle. Fill your gas tank or charge your electric vehicle ahead of the storm, if conditions allow. Keep cash available. ATMs and electronic payment systems may be unavailable during an outage. Plan for backup power safely. Review generator instructions. Always operate generators outdoors, away from doors, windows and vents, and never in wet conditions.

EV Safety Reminder: If flooding is possible, move your electric vehicle to higher ground when safe. If it becomes flood-damaged, do not start, charge or operate it until inspected by a qualified professional.

Keep Information Handy

Save your policy information. Keep a digital or printed copy of your insurance details somewhere accessible. Access your Customer Portal. Sign in or create your account before the storm so you can access policy information when needed. Save important contacts. Keep your insurance agent's information and Tower Hill's Claims page handy.
